SARAWAK is leading the way in modernising its construction industry through the adoption of Building Information Modelling (BIM) technology, in line with the National Construction Policy 2030, said Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas.
The Minister for Infrastructure and Port Development highlighted this initiative during his winding-up speech on Wednesday, noting its potential to revolutionise public infrastructure projects across the state.
“The Sarawak Public Works Department (PWD Sarawak), in collaboration with the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB), has been championing BIM technology since 2016.
“The department has implemented 33 pilot projects and targetted training programmes, culminating in the establishment of the PWD Sarawak Digital Lab.
“To improve productivity and achieve long-term cost savings, PWD Sarawak is focusing on projects valued above RM10 million for buildings and RM100 million for infrastructure as part of its initial implementation,” he said. The state aims for 100 per cent BIM integration across its construction projects by 2030.
He also highlighted the transformative nature of BIM, which digitally models construction projects to enhance precision and efficiency. This strategic shift not only strengthens Sarawak’s construction standards but also prepares the local workforce for the demands of a digital economy.
Looking ahead, PWD Sarawak is advancing its digital readiness by integrating cutting-edge technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) within BIM. These advancements promise to set new benchmarks in sustainability, smart design, and resilience for public infrastructure.
“This approach ensures that our projects meet the highest standards of efficiency and innovation, enabling Sarawak to remain a leader in modern and effective infrastructure development,” he said.
He added the adoption of BIM technology is part of a broader strategy to align Sarawak with global construction trends and enhance the state’s competitiveness.
“Let us move forward with this digital transformation, supporting PWD Sarawak as they continue to lead in delivering world-class public infrastructure,” he added.
