KUCHING: Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian is concerned about the future challenges of Malaysia’s healthcare.

Reflecting on his recent visit to the Netherlands and Switzerland, Dr Sim said the country will foresee numerous challenges.

“I foresee we will be in double jeopardy — rapid aging and brain drains of nurses and doctors beyond Singapore and Saudi Arabia.

“Unless urgent steps are taken, including increasing spending on the area of healthcare, we are going to have problems,” he said in a Facebook post.

Earlier, Dr Sim, who is also the Minister of Public Health, Housing, and Local Government, received a courtesy call by the Ministry of Health (MoH) Nursing Division director Matron Devi K Saravana Muthu.

“During the meeting, there were fruitful exchanges on the challenges of nursing in Malaysia, particularly in Sarawak.

“The challenge is due to decreased intake during Covid-19 by the MoH nursing training school,” he said.
