BINTULU: Pertama Ferroalloys Sdn Bhd (PFA) and Kemena Industries Sdn Bhd, have formalised an agreement for the purchase and storage of Pertama’s Silicomanganese (SiMn) slag byproduct, a key development for both companies and the region’s industrial sustainability efforts.
The agreement was formalised in a signing ceremony at Wisma Bintulu, between Pertama general manager Yuki Nakamura and Kemena Global managing director Albert Hii Toh Ing.
Under the agreement, Kemena Industries will purchase 500,000 metric tons of SiMn slag in the first year with an estimated 200,000 metric tons to be supplied annually in subsequent years, thus highlighting a shared commitment to environmental stewardship and the circular economy.
With the necessary stockyard facilities in place, Kemena Industries is well-positioned to store the byproducts for future industrial use.
Both parties are awaiting the Department of Environment’s approval to begin using SiMn slag in various applications.
Pertama’s SiMn slag has been verified as non-hazardous and environmentally safe, in accordance with the Guideline for the Application of Special Management of Scheduled Waste.
The company has already established an effective framework for recycling its byproducts, which are used across several industries, including civil engineering, road construction, and agriculture.
This purchase agreement marks a significant step forward in supporting the Department of Environment’s mission and emphasizes Pertama’s dedication to the 3R’s—Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.
By entering into this multifaceted partnership, both companies are contributing to a sustainable approach to industrial byproduct management.
The partnership is expected to help enhance the sustainable reuse of materials in the region, reinforcing both companies’ commitment to environmentally responsible practices.
