KUCHING: The establishment of the Sarawak Artificial Intelligence Centre (SAIC) will commence next year, according to Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

He said the centre which focuses on Artificial Intelligence (AI) research, development and commercialisation has been approved by the state Cabinet recently.

“We have approved the establishment of an AI centre, which is likely to start next year because we need to allocate a budget for the management of the AI centre.

“This AI centre will include generative AI. I have also requested a workshop for civil servants to familiarise themselves with AI technology,” he said.

He said this when met by reporters after officiating at the 31st Premier Sarawak Special Award and symbolic presentation of free laptops and book vouchers to IPT students at Hikmah Exchange Event Centre here today.

When asked on the cost for the establishment, he said it could not be determined yet.

“As for the cost, we don’t know yet because we have to consider the centre and also the connectivity,” he said.

Abang Johari said the state government is committed in establishing the centre in tandem with the state effort’s to foster new and innovative applications across various sectors, enhancing technological capabilities.

“When this happens, our children will be able to master any knowledge through the use of AI and electronic devices.

“That’s why we introduced laptops earlier. Once they are proficient with laptops, they will be able to use them to enhance their knowledge,” he added.

On a related note, Abang Johari aims for Sarawakian children to learn and produce chips that can store data.

“We have two types of chips. One is an analog chip. Analog chips have different data storage. So what we’re doing now is that, because of AI and generative AI, the chip design is different, with at least three layers, referred to as a compound chip.

“These are used in avionics, which are employed in airplanes and satellites. Therefore, we want to establish a basic programme leading to a degree in aerospace.

“And that’s why I mentioned earlier that some of our students overseas are pursuing their master’s degrees, and they will return to serve with us because we offer scholarships for aerospace technology,”said Abang Johari.
