KUCHING: When it comes to getting a permanent tattoo, many people experience a range of emotions.

For first-timers, in particular, they often face a dilemma – finding the right tattoo artist, deciding on a design or style, and choosing the perfect placement for the tattoo on their body.

However, there is no need to worry, as there are now airbrush tattoos available. These tattoos create a non-permanent image on the skin that closely resembles a real tattoo.

Recently during the 2nd Kuching International Tattoo Expo 2024 held from Apr 5 to 7 at the Dayak Bidayuh National Association (DBNA) Hall here, former construction manager turned tattoo artist Jason Thian added a unique twist to the expo atmosphere.

It was noticed that visitors to his booth eagerly lined up for a unique experience – getting temporary tattoos created using an airbrush technique that is both painless and harmless.

The 30-year-old owner of Body Mural tattoo studio said the idea to offer airbrush tattoos came about when he noticed a demand from clients who could not find such services readily available here.

Thus, he decided to invest in an airbrush machine which he sourced from Malaysia and introduced this service to his studio.

“I think temporary tattoos using airbrush technique are more common in West Malaysia, and looking at the demand for temporary tattoos in Kuching, I decided to offer airbrush tattoos here.

“I started it last year and the response to airbrush tattoos has been positive, with many appreciating the temporary and stress-free nature of the tattoos,” he said, while adding that getting airbrush tattoos are more affordable ranging from RM5 and above depending on the sizes.

He added that airbrush tattoos are fun and pain-free, and it is suitable for children or individuals who cannot tolerate the pain of getting inked permanently.

Thian, who specialises mainly in Japanese artwork, minimalist, oriental, floral, and other old-school designs, said the airbrush tattoos can last for approximately one week.

“For customers who are unsure about getting a permanent tattoo, airbrush tattoos provide a convenient solution.

“So, I do have a variety of templates for customers to choose from. Once they have decide, the template is stick on their body and then spray with ink using the airbrush,” he said, adding that that airbrush tattoos typically use temporary black ink.

Thian further explained that the process of completing an airbrush tattoo takes less than two minutes.

“Airbrush tattoos can be applied to any part of the body and can be removed using nail polish remover, which is less harmful than thinner.

“The ink used for airbrush tattoos is skin-safe as it remains on the outer surface of the skin,” he said.

Commenting further, he hoped to expand his airbrush tattoo business by participating in more events here, where he can introduce this service to a wider audience.
