KUCHING: The Mid-Autumn Festival will be brighter this year with a special Lantern Fabrication Competition scheduled from September 22 to October 1.
Kuching Surimas Fans of Art, Dance, and Music Association chairman, Datuk Sim Kiang Chiok, said it is aimed at celebrating and promoting the rich cultural arts associated with the festival.
He stressed that all lanterns entered must be displayed throughout the festival. This will allow the public to view and enjoy the creativity on display.
“This competition is open to everyone – regardless of nationality. Both individuals and groups, from schools to associations, can participate. There’s no limit to the number of lanterns you can submit,” said Sim in a statement yesterday.
However, there are some guidelines for the lanterns. They shouldn’t be bigger than one cubic metre. While creativity is encouraged, lantern designs in just black and white will not be considered.
For those with an eye on the prize, the rewards are enticing:
First place: RM500
Second place: RM350
Third place: RM250
Two consolation prizes: RM150 each
If you’re keen to participate, remember to register by September 22. Lanterns should be brought to the Plaza Merdeka Shopping Mall by 7 pm on that day. The judging will start at 8 pm.
The winners will be announced on October 1, with a prize-giving ceremony at the mall’s main stage at 8 pm.
