KUCHING: Hawkers, vendors and their workers are all required to be vaccinated, said Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor, Datuk Wee Hong Seng.
He said his council had met the hawkers and vendors at the hawker centres and markets on the new policy.
Those who had completed their vaccinations would be given certificates to prove that they had been injected, he added at a food distribution programme at the Lingga Block Community Hall at the KMC flats here today.
“We want people who go to the hawker centres and markets to feel safe and, at the same time, encourage others to go for the vaccination,” he said.
The mayor said his council had also contacted the Coffee Shop Association, Restaurant Association and others about the new policy.
“They all support the policy,” he added.
The policy was also supported by Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) chairman Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas.
Wee said so far, almost 85 percent of the council’s hawkers and vendors had been vaccinated.
“Some markets have almost 90 percent of their vendors vaccinated and I believe we will achieve the 100 percent mark very soon,” he added.
