MIRI: A local man is being remanded for seven days until November 5 to assist police investigate the abuse of a two-year-old child here. Magistrate Md Syafique Md Hilmie allowed the remand which the investigation officer applied for.

The 28-year-old suspect was placed under police custody around 5.30pm last Monday evening. The alleged incident happened in a house at Jalan Luak Bay here when the toddler was under his care.

The boy who is currently being treated at Miri Hospital has injury marks on his body and suffers from brain swelling.

He was rushed to hospital around 12.30am on October 26 after the mother noticed that the child had uncontrolled muscle contractions.

Earlier on, she was told by her eldest daughter that the boy had fallen from a stair. According to the facts of the case, prior to the incident, the woman, who is a single mother had put her son in the house of the 28-year-old at Jalan Luak Bay for him to look after.

He had been taking care of the child for about two weeks. The accused and the child’s mother have been in a relationship for four
years. 
The case is being investigated under Section 31 (1)(a)of the Child Act 2001.
