BINTULU: Sarawak recorded an enrolment rate of 98.92 per cent involving Year 1 children attending kindergarten, preschool and nursery education last year.
Deputy Minister of Women, Early Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Datuk Rosey Yunus said the high enrolment rate reflected the State government’s commitment in ensuring that every child deserved access to quality early education.
She disclosed this after visiting Sedidik Rumah Mersam and Sipok here recently.
On her visit to Sedidik Rumah Mersam and Sipok, she said it was to review the operation of Tadika SeDidik, especially in rural areas and to obtain information and feedbacks related to the implementation of early childhood education from teachers and the local community.
“We wanted to identify local issues and challenges and to come up with measures to improve early childhood education in this area in particular and in Sarawak,” she said.
Rosey, who is also Bekenu assemblywoman, said that her ministry is targeting for 100 per cent enrolment rate of children to have access to early childhood education.
“We are providing inclusive early childhood education through ‘open-door policy’ and ‘sign language programme’ through SeDidik,” she said.
“Our focus and emphasis are on the formation of children’s character and personality (character building) through the practice and application of good values through the Bersih Awal, Bersih Akhir (BaBa) programme and this year, the Save For Golden Future (saving) programme started in Tadika and Taska SeDidik,” she explained.
In addition, improving the quality of early childhood development by providing training opportunities to improve teachers’ skills as well as establishing and expanding cooperation at the international level, are also crucial.
Among those present were Murum assemblyman Kennedy Chukpai Ugon.
