Longest Christmas Yule Log
Holiday Inn Miri successfully created the longest chocolate Christmas Yule Log in Malaysia, measured and verified at 101.7 metres long on 21 December 1998.
The ingredients used included 1,800 eggs, 43kg of sugar, 24kg of butter, 12kg of baking powder, 24kg of shortening, 20kg of cooking oil and 32kg of flour.
The hotel’s chefs needed 17 days of preparation and almost non-stop baking to complete the Yule Log.
They were baked in varying lengths of between 1 and 3 feet, refrigerated, then joined together by 8 kitchen staff on the last day.
A 5cm portion of the Yule Log was sold to the public at RM5 each and its proceeds were donated entirely to the Miri Kidney Dialysis Centre.
First Breadroll Christmas Tree
Holiday Inn Miri created a Christmas Tree out of breadrolls, believed to be the first of its kind in the State in December 1998.
The brainchild of their pastry Chef, Iskak Rahmat and his team, the ‘tree’ was made from 2,419 leftover breadrolls and then affixed to a 17-foot styrofoam skeleton, which took one day to construct as well as attach.
A contest was held in conjunction with the Breadroll Christmas Tree, where participants were asked to guess the height of the tree. Proceeds were donated to various charities in Miri.
Largest amount of popcorn cooked
Starting 8am on 22 August 1999, 10 hotels in Kuching produced the largest amount of popcorn in the country.
The attempt was the highlight of the Carnival of Hoteliers, held at the Kuching City South Council Hall.
The chefs from the hotels and their assistants joined hands to cook 1,150kg of raw corn in a container measuring 10 feet high. It took them four hours for preparation, and later the popcorn was sold to the public and its proceeds donated to charity.
The hotels involved were Merdeka Palace Hotel & Suites, Crowne Plaza Riverside, Holiday Inn Kuching, Telang Usan Hotel, Hotel Grand Continental, Santubong Kuching Resort, Rajah Court Hotel, Kingwood Inn, Holiday Inn Resort Damai Beach and Holiday Inn Resort Damai Lagoon.
