PART 25

Longest “Jalur Gemilang” flag
Fourteen students from Queen’s Art Academy in Kuching created the nation’s longest flag, “Jalur Gemilang” to mark the 42nd National Day.

To complete the flag, they stitched up 46 bales of cloth material, each measuring 40 yards in length, and used up 110 litres of red paint.

The work on the 1.6km long flag started at 8.30am on 16 January 1999, and they completed their task at midnight on 25 August 1999.

‘Jalur Gemilang’ was unveiled on 31 August 1999 at the Bintulu Airport, where the State-Level National Day celebration was being held in Bintulu that year.

The project took them a total of 1,600 ‘man’ hours to complete, otherwise similar to a single person working 24 hours a day for 66 days non-stop!

First Bonsai Competition
The first ever Bonsai competition in Sarawak was held at the Sibu Civic Centre, Sibu from 20 December 2000 until 23 December 2000. It was jointly organised by the Sibu Bonsai Association and the Sibu Civic Centre.

More than 160 Bonsai entries were received, with other plants and flowers on display. Besides participants from Sibu, some came from Kuching, Sarikei, Bintulu, Miri and Kapit.

The competition aimed to promote the appreciation of the beauty of Bonsai, and also to encourage and spread the art of Bonsai cultivating.

From a total of 10 categories in the competition, Chong Tze Fah emerged the overall individual winner, bagging the Top Award. Other Gold Medallists took home a RM300 prize money and trophy each.

Heaviest sack of rice
The country’s heaviest sack of rice was accumulated at the Everrise Departmental Store, BDC in Kuching on 25 November 2000.

Dubbed “The Incredible Bulk”, the sack weighed 1.5 tonnes, breaking its way into the Malaysia Book of Records. Agriculture and Food Industry Assistant Minister, David Teng Lung Chi, topped up the final kilogrammes of rice grains into the ‘incredible bulk’ of a sack.

The feat was made possible by Beras Corporation Sendirian Berhad.
