KUCHING: Ambrosse Giak, 21, emerged as the champion of the Sarawak Bouldering Championship 2019 at The Hills shopping mall here on Saturday.
According to him, it was his first title in the competition.
“I’ve been in third place when I joined the event in Singapore.
“This is my fifth entry in the sport which finally brings me success,” he said after receiving his prize.
“I was a little nervous, because I was the last competitor in the final.
“All eyes were focused on me when passing the first, second and last route,” Ambrosse recalled.
“This sport is my job and also my hobby.
“Now I am one of the route setters and working at the Cam5 Climbing Gym at One Utama Selangor,” he said, adding that he has been actively involved in the sport since four years ago.
According to Ambrosse, the involvement of Sarawakians in the sport is still in its early stage.
“Anyone who is interested in this sport and wants to go further should always be focused and passionate.
“The enthusiasts also need to possess the knowledge in climbing and what’s important is not to be stressed, but instead you need to enjoy it when doing the sport,” he added.
He said what’s important for the sport is the spirit and confidence to move forward.
Meanwhile, over 80 climbers took part in the Sarawak Bouldering Championship 2019 here Saturday with athletes competing in three age groups.
