KUCHING: The proposed constitutional amendment to stop party hopping is a good idea that will end the frog politics that has been plaguing democracy.
State Legislative Assembly (DUN) Deputy Speaker Datuk Idris Buang, who pointed this out, added that there should be a constitutional provision to disqualify a member of parliament or assembly person if he/she crossed over to another party other than the party that gave him, her the ticket in the election which he/she last won.
“The constitution, being the supreme law, will make it final for the person to give up his/her constituency altogether and discontinue being an MP or an assembly person.
“Hence, a clear answer to end this debacle that has been plaguing democracy,” he said on Saturday.
The Muara Tuang assemblyman said that several attempts for changeovers in the helm of government had been witnessed because of unprincipled politicians who had been making their respective MP or assembly person’s seats like tradable commodities.
“More so, the nation’s political and economic stability becomes somewhat uncertain because of the conduct and propaganda of such politicians and political parties.
“Some of them unrelentingly grapple for power, trying to take over the helm of government even though they clearly do not have the capability to govern,” he added.
In a recent report, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Parliament) Datuk Seri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar stated that the constitutional amendments, including the tabling of anti-hopping laws, were on track for the Dewan Rakyat sitting on Feb 28.
