KUCHING: A coalition government consisting of various political parties may be formed after the 15th general election (GE15) if no party wins a simple majority.
Political analyst Professor Dr Neilson Ilan Mersat stated that this was because there were various political alliances and component parties competing in this election.
He said many were predicting that there would be no clear winner.
“In my view, there will be a mixture of political parties making a coalition to form the new federal government,” he said on Tuesday (Nov 15).
The Universiti Malaysia Sarawak Faculty of Social Science and Humanities dean said the formation of a mixed government would depend on which political party offered and bargained to form a coalition.
When asked about Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) being a kingmaker in this election, he agreed that GPS had the potential to do so.
He said GPS was very likely to win most of the 31 contested parliamentary seats thus it would have a strong influence on the formation of the new federal government.
For the record, a total of 112 parliamentary seats are required to obtain a simple majority while 148 parliamentary seats are required to obtain a two-thirds majority.
