KUCHING: As Christmas draws near, the people are called to remember and extend a helping hand to those in need and embrace the spirit of compassion and generosity.

Bishop of Kuching (Sarawak & Brunei Darussalam) Right Reverend Datuk Danald Jute emphasised the importance of remembering the less fortunate, the sick, and those facing hardships during the festive season.

“Let us embrace the spirit of compassion and generosity by reaching out to them and sharing the blessings that God has bestowed upon us,” he said in a statement shared through his Facebook page.

Reflecting on the nativity story, he said it reminds Christians that Jesus was born in a humble manger – pointing to the simplicity and purity of divine love.

“May this amazing love touch and guide us,” he said.

Amidst conflicts and challenges globally, he said Christmas serves as a beacon of hope, peace and reconciliation.

“We pray for a peaceful resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict,” he said.

Danald also shared personal challenges faced by his family, acknowledging the Cancer Unit of the Sarawak General Hospital as their second home and expressing immense gratitude for the support and prayers received.

On another note, he took the opportunity to express his gratitude to the Sarawak government and those who have contributed their assistance to the Anglican Church, especially towards the construction of the House of the Epiphany (HOE).

“As a Diocese, we celebrate and praise God for the completion of the HOE. Thank you for your kind contributions.

“We wish to record a huge thank you to our Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and the state government, for the generous grant of RM11.5 million.

“The HOE was officially opened by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas on Dec 4, while the Consecration Service will be on Epiphany Day, Jan 6, 2024 at 8am,” he said, while welcoming all to join the service.

Danald and his wife, Julita Jack Sungul also extended warm wishes for a Merry Christmas filled with the warmth of God’s love, hope, and blessings for the New Year 2024.

“It is Christmas! A season whence true hope, joy, peace and love is most profound as God fulfilled his promise of old in the birth of his son Jesus. This Jesus is the Saviour of the world.
This Jesus is the reason for this season. There is no Christmas without Christ,” he concluded.
