KUCHING: A renewed anti-corruption mood appears to be brewing in Malaysia especially after the conviction and jailing of former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

Political observer Datuk Peter Minos said nowadays, more and more Malaysians of all political persuasions, including some in Umno, seem to be harbouring a similar resolve.

The mood is one of anti-corruption and anti-abuse of power by those in authority and in high places.

He said this has been evident following the conviction and incarceration of Najib recently.

“Behind that mood is of course Malaysians’ deep concern and true love for their nation … that is wanting to stop corruption and any criminal offence from destroying the country,” he said.

“They want the nation to be saved and to rise up again and run like before.”

Minos said it is undeniable that Malaysians want the country’s name, honour and dignity to be restored.

“Any decent and law-abiding Malaysian has this inner feeling. This is simply being human and natural.

“If and when the corrupted ones in top positions are felled by the law, it is hoped and expected that Malaysia will have a chance to redeem itself and to rise up again for good in political, economic and all other fields,” he said.
