Anugerah Seni Budaya Sarawak aims to recognise contributions to cultural arts

KUCHING: Anugerah Seni Budaya Sarawak (ASBS) 2023 serves as a platform that produces a community that cultivates art and produce new talents to further develop cultural arts in Sarawak.

Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the ASBS 2023 is a synergy programme between the state and federal governments to give recognition to arts and culture figures or industry players for their outstanding contributions to the art and culture industry.

One of ASBS’ objectives is to appreciate and recognise individuals and artists who have been consistent in the arts and culture industry in Sarawak as well as encourage quality and competitive production of artworks and art products.

The recognition is also given to non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and other parties who often support, and are involved in art and culture programmes in Sarawak.

ASBS was last held in 2016, with the top award given to Matthew Ngau Jau in the music category, and in 2015, Ramli Arif received the top award in the dance category.

“The state government sincerely hopes that through ASBS, it will be able to reinvigorate art and culture activities and restore the economy of the local people.

“Around 53 nominees will compete for 11 prestigious awards in the Anugerah Seni Budaya Sarawak (ASBS) on Oct 22,” he told the media here on Monday (Oct 9).

The ASBS 2023 will be held at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) complex and will see 11 awards presented to the winners.

Among the awards are ‘Anugerah Tokoh Seni Budaya Sarawak’ (NGO and media), ‘Anugerah Sri Apresiasi Seni Sarawak’, ‘Anugerah Nilakandi Seni Sarawak’ while the other six awards are subcategories for specific arts such as dance art, music art, theater art, language art, martial arts and traditional games.
