BUKIT MERTAJAM: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today asked voters, especially those in Penang, to give the Unity Government a chance to govern in the state election this year.
Anwar said although the state polls have no bearing on the Federal Government, the present Penang government must be given the time needed to bring about further changes.
“Give us the time to prove with good governance and to stop embezzlement for the sake of the state’s development,” he said during the Prime Minister’s address to state civil servants here today.
He said a better administration would mean justice for all those who had sacrificed their time and effort to improve the economy.
“In this case, the people who sacrificed a lot are civil servants, so I will announce some good news on Tuesday,” he said.
Penang is among the six states including Kedah, Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, Kelantan and Terengganu that will hold state elections this year.
The six states have reportedly agreed to dissolve their respective state legislative assemblies in the final two weeks of June to pave the way for the state polls.
Meanwhile, Anwar, who is also Finance Minister, also assured Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow that the Unity government will continue to help develop the state as a research centre for the digital industry.
He said Penang before this had been somewhat left out of several major projects, but since the Unity government was established, more attention has been given to having such projects in the state.
“We must use all the resources to continue with these projects.. all those projects that were sidelined, to not just continue, but to redevelop so that Penang remains at the forefront,” he said.
When tabling Budget 2023 in February, Anwar announced the expansion of the Penang International Airport (LTAPP) which will be spearheaded by Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB). — BERNAMA
