KUCHING: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will be able to secure two-thirds majority when he calls for a vote of confidence when Parliament convenes tomorrow, said political analyst Dr Azmi Hassan.
Azmi, who is also a Senior Fellow at the Nusantara Academy for Strategic Research, is confident Anwar will secure more than the required two-thirds if all MPs in the government support Anwar.
“It is without a doubt that he will have the two-thirds majority and this is totally different from the two governments led by Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri where the majority and the legality of two as Prime Ministers were in question.
“The reason why Anwar will propose the vote of confidence on the first day of the Parliament sitting is because he knows he can secure the two-thirds majority.
“Secondly, he doesn’t want to repeat the fiasco of going through the internal conflict for the opposition to question his legality of securing the majority of vote of confidence,” he told New Sarawak Tribune today.
He was commenting on the tabling of motion of confidence in Anwar tomorrow (Dec 19) which would be presented by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof.
Fadillah said the tabling of motion in the Dewan Rakyat was necessary to put an end to the question of stability of the newly formed unity government led by Anwar.
Azmi reiterated that Anwar would secure the two-thirds majority because the blocs that supported Anwar realised and understood that the country needed to go ahead without any more internal bickering.
“I think that’s the reason why Barisan Nasional (BN), Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS), Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS), Warisan and one Independent supported Anwar because numbers are important and they want to go ahead.
“We as the people want to go ahead for the next three to four years and possibly, for the full term of Anwar-led government,” he added.
Azmi said after Dec 19, the government would not have to think whether it had majority support or whether a party bloc was pulling out.
“The primary concern is to deal with the economy that we are facing right now.
“We must carry on with our lives with better policies and better strategies by the government after Dec 19,” he said.
