FIELDING MPs IN STATE POLLS
KUCHING: Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah said if an MP is seen as the best candidate to win a certain seat in the next state election that MP should be allowed to stand.
The Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) senior member said candidates are picked to suit the needs of constituencies and their parties.
“Above all, they must be seen as the most winnable candidates by their respective parties,” said Fatimah, who is Welfare, Community Wellbeing, Women, Family and Childhood Development Minister, in an interview yesterday.
Fatimah, however, felt that a person who is an MP and a state assemblyman will surely have his hands full.
“I would say it is most practical to quickly groom somebody else as an MP candidate for the next General Election (GE),” she added.
Fatimah was responding to PBB vice-president Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah remark’s that Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) MPs can contest in the state election provided the top leadership allows it.
Meanwhile, Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) women chief Datuk Seri Doris Sophia Brodie said legally it is not wrong for a person to be both MP and ADUN.
“Likewise, if any of the GPS component parties wants to field an MP in the next state election, there is no problem provided he or she is a winnable candidate,” she said.
Doris said she supports the move especially if that is the wish of the general masses or constituents and of course if their respective parties endorse it.
“After all, it is all about people first, people’s choice and winning the seats for GPS,” she said.
