KUCHING: An animal activist is appealing to the public and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) for more funding to help stray cats.
Arzuna Abdullah, founder of Street Paws Volunteer, said the platform was established to encourage more public awareness, especially in helping stray cats.
“We are a group of freelancers who are very active on the ground, especially if there are reported cases of stray cats.
“Currently, we house about 82 cats in our mini shelter and we are in need of more funding as there are certain cats which require special care,”
she said when met by reporters at the 1st Street Paw Volunteers Mini Charity Cat Show held at Aeroville Mall, yesterday.
She added that the estimated cost of medical care for the 82 cats is about RM2,000 per month. This includes need for special treatment and highlighted that more funding is needed at the moment as the organisation is currently relying on public donations.
“Donations would come pouring in from Facebook as well, especially from our friends.
“Any agencies who wish to help or donate are also highly welcomed,” she added.
She also expressed hope that more publicmembers will be aware of the presence of the organisation.
“I hope the public too will consider adopting, which in a way will give a brand new life to these stray cats,” she said.
On the event, she said it received an overwhelming response with about 91 cats of different breeds participating and competing for respective titles.
The categories are kitten shorthair and longhair; adult shorthair and longhair; adult Sarawak local cat and kitten Sarawak local cat.
According to Arzuna, the registration fees from participants will be fully used to cover the medical fee of the stray cats at the mini shelter.
The one-day event is organised by Street Paws Volunteer and sponsored by JJ Pet Shop.
