KUCHING: The Malaysia Games (SUKMA) Sepak Takraw women’s doubles event is the sole competition unable to meet the minimum requirement of six participating states, out of 30 events initially at risk of cancellation due to low participation.

In view of this, Deputy Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Minister Datuk Gerald Rentap Jabu said an appeal will be made to allow events with just five participating states to proceed.

Rentap stated that following yesterday’s technical committee meeting for the Games, currently, only the women’s doubles team in Sepak Takraw has participation from five states.

“We will bring this to the SUKMA Supreme Council on July 18 and make an appeal because some states have already bought (flight tickets) and our team is ready.

Rentap speaks to reporters at the event

“This is not good for the development of sports in the country,” he told reporters after attending the Sarawak Gold Hunter Camp for the 21st SUKMA 2024 at Raia Hotel and Convention Centre on Sunday (July 14).

Rentap, who also serves as the continent’s chef de mission, suggested continuing with the Games, even with only five states participating, due to the approaching event dates.

He expressed willingness to lend Sarawakian athletes to other states to promote unity and support nationwide sports development.

“States like Pulau Pinang, Sabah, and Melaka have borrowed athletes. While budget constraints may be a concern, providing a platform for our athletes to gain more exposure helps enhance their experience,” he said.

Rentap then said that providing the athletes experience and exposure is particularly valuable for new athletes who may not otherwise participate in major competitions.

“With 37 sports involved, this is akin to the SEA Games and provides beneficial experience ahead of events like the SEA Games and Olympics.

“We are enthusiastic about offering them opportunities to compete at higher levels,” he said.

He also revealed that out of the 30 sports potentially facing cancellation, 29 have been reinstated thanks to the cooperation of the respective state directors.
