KUCHING: Steven Smail, 40, lives in Kampung Quop, about 10 miles from Kuching.

The mechanic and his family of six have been applying for electricity since 2007.

Steven said that for 13 years his application, requests and pleas to “those elected or appointed” have either been ignored or fallen on deaf ears.

In a bid to help him, Steven’s family friend recently contacted the president of Habitat for Indigenous and Urban Program (Hidup), a local based NGO, George Young Jr for help.

George and his Hidup team visited Kampung Quop, where Steven and 10 other families had been living without electricity for years.

Hidup team also visited a group of families in Taman Merdang 2 to look into their flood issues.

George urged the relevant authorities including the elected representatives to look into the plight of these families.

He said no Sarawakian families deserved to be denied such basic services, especially when they were within the established electricity grid.
