KUCHING: The Matang-Stapok dual-carriageway bridge is expected to be open to the public in April this year.

Minister of Works, Dato’ Sri Fadillah Yusof revealed that based on the schedule, the Emart-Stapok dual-carriageway project would be completed in March.

“The construction of the bridge has been completed. What’s left is the final details for the connecting roads,” he explained during a work visit to the project site at Jalan Stapok here yesterday.

Fadillah also pointed out that the project has suffered from theft whereby the bridge’s construction materials have been stolen.

He urged the public to not damage public property as it would not only cause delay to the project, but could also jeopardise the safety of road users.

Meanwhile, he added that the 15th Mile Kuching-Serian Road upgrading works would be completed in May this year.

“The road will be open to the public in time for Gawai celebration and hopefully, the audit on the project can be conducted in June,” said the Minister of Works.

Fadillah, who is also Petra Jaya Member of Parliament, disclosed that the construction at Datuk Abang Haji Kipali roundabout in Petra Jaya has been delayed due to rainy season.

He revealed that the construction works involved underground construction, especially with soil-digging works.

“Based on the agreement, it was supposed to be completed in February, but due to the unusual amount of rain, it is slightly behind schedule.

“It is expected to be completed by the end of April,” he said, adding that it was not critical as long as it was open in time to the public.

The Minister of Works explained that after the project is completed, the only thing left to do would be to monitor the overall specification and standards of the project according to the agreement.

He hoped that the construction of Datuk Abang Haji Kipali roundabout in Petra Jaya for approval of Certificate of Practical Completion (CPC) and the safety audit would be done by May this year.
