KUCHING: The Wawasan Recreational Park at Arang Road here will be equipped with much better facilities for the public to exercise and do other physical activities.

Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) chairman Lo Khere Chiang said that the current shade at the park will be replaced with a bigger one like a gazebo that is 10 metres wide and 25 metres long.

“I have allocated RM150,000 from my RM5 million Rural Transformation Programme (RTP) fund for the project,” he told reporters at the park today.

He said the upgrading would commence between April and May, and is expected to be completed in three to four months.

“Currently, there is an open space for people to exercise, but there is no shade which may cause inconvenience when it rains.

“Once the shade, concrete floor, benches, and lights have been completed, the place will have a more comfortable environment,” he said.

Lo, who is also the Batu Kitang assemblyman, recalled that the initial plan was to put a shade over the basketball court, but the majority of the nearby residents were not in favour of it as the people who use the place might become noisy and disturb the peace of the neighbourhood.

“We consulted the residents and decided not to pursue the matter in the interest of the majority. We need to respect their views,” he said.

He revealed that it was Arang Road Community Association chairman Lai Jun Man who suggested a place to put up the new shade.

“Mr Lai suggested that we put up a lower shade mainly to shelter people who exercise,” he said.

On other issues that might affect the people, he urged the Arang Road folk speak to their respective community leaders.

“I also encourage people to come together to hold ‘gotong-royong’ projects. I will provide the RTP fund,” he said.

Also present at the park with him were MPP Building Section work superintendent Hartini Ahmad, Arang Road community leaders Penghulu Thian Sing Hwa, and Kapitan Kuan Ted Chai.
