KUCHING: A community area committee has been formed to better serve the people living in Sekama, Lumba Kuda, Ellis, and Ang Cheng Ho areas here.
The formation of the committee is a joint effort by Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Kuching Branch and Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Padungan Branch.
The two party branches will be collaborating with Kuching City South Council (MBKS) to solve the residents’ daily issues.
PBB Padungan Branch chief Datuk Seri Rohani Abdul Karim, who is the committee’s advisor said with the formation of the committee, issues raised by the residents would be solved on the ground and much faster.
“When these people seek help from us to solve drainage problems or other issues, then we will forward the complaint to MBKS’s I People Application (App),” she told reporters after a courtesy call on MBKS Mayor Datuk James Chan at MBKS Building at Jalan Padungan here, yesterday.
Rohani who is also Batang Lupar MP said the committee would do its best to response to the residents’ needs and improve its services to the people.
Mayor Chan is expected to launch the community area committee at MBKS Community Hall at 1.30pm on April 27.
Meanwhile, SUPP Kuching Branch chief Datuk Lily Yong said it would be more effective to work under one committee because previously the parties involved only had a small committee to solve issues.
“For instance, many commercial areas in Ang Cheng Ho are abandoned so with this committee we can engage with the residents, and from there they can give inputs on how we can revamp the area,” she pointed out.
Yong who is also an advisor for the committee, stressed that the committee would speed up the process of solving any complaint with MBKS and other related agencies.
“Most of us are very tired and sick of some politicians who quarrel every day and play the blaming games. So, this is the purpose of the committee. We want to help our people irrespective of race, religion, and political difference to get problems solved and at the same time to beatify Kuching city,” she said.
Mayor Chan said he welcomed the idea and looked forward to work with the committee.
“This is what the government wants to do. They are serving the people in a more professional manner rather than politicising issues,” he said.
Chan added that with Yong and Rohani in the committee would also help MBKS to bring any matter to the higher authority if the matter is out of its hands.
The committee is headed by MBKS councillor Jong Yean Pin and his deputy, Hossen Rel @ Hassan Rail.
The committee presently has 20 members comprising residents and shop owners in the four areas.
The MBKS’ IPeople App is an application for members of the public to submit feedbacks, complaints or issues they face directly to MBKS.
