BUENOS AIRES: Argentine President Alberto Fernandez has been sued over the alleged abuse of power over his remarks on the data on poverty provided by the country’s national institute of statistics, Sputnik reported.
Earlier in the week, in an interview with the Noticias Argentinas news agency, Fernandez expressed criticism over methods used by the institute to collect statistics after it said that the poverty rate in the country accounted for 40 per cent.
He said Argentine “would explode if this poverty rate were real”.
Fernandez was also sued for alleged violation of work duty by a public official over his remarks, the Argentine TN broadcaster reported on Tuesday.
The lawyer who filed the lawsuit asked the court to ban Fernandez from leaving the country, saying that he might leave for France immediately after the inauguration of the new president, Javier Milei, later in the week, the report added.
On Nov 19, far-right libertarian Milei won the runoff presidential election in Argentina. He will officially take office on Dec 10. – BERNAMA-SPUTNIK
