BA’KELALAN: An attempt by two individuals to smuggle subsidised goods out to a neighbouring country, was thwarted by the armed forces on Wednesday (May 8).

The First Infantry Division said that the incident happened around 12 pm near Kampung Kunang Kelalan, about 900 metres from the Malaysia-Indonesia border.

During a routine patrol, a team of Malaysian and Indonesian soldiers heard the sound of a vehicle at an identified illegal route and they went to inspect the area.

Upon arrival, they noticed two suspicious civilians fleeing and evading arrest after realising the presence of the soldiers.

“The team, however, managed to find several items being dumped near a hut in the area.

“Further inspections led to the seizure of basic necessities such as 60 packs of wheat flour, 30 packs of cooking oil, 24 bottles of Label 5 liquor and nine cans of Carlsberg and Royal Stout beers.

“All the goods, valued at RM4,182, are suspected to be smuggled out to Indonesia,” the division said.
