KUCHING: A 67-year-old man attempted to bribe a State General Operations Force (GOF) officer with RM10,000 to avoid arrest and seizure of RM456,988 worth of illicit cigarettes and beers.
State Brigade Commander, SAC Mancha Ata said that the raid operation — codenamed ‘Ops Libas’ — was carried out by a team of officers from GOF and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) at a house around 11am on Wednesday (Nov 25).
“During the raid, they found 1,500 cartons of white cigarettes (300,000 sticks) and 1,040 cartons of clove cigarettes (166,400 sticks) worth RM361,488 along with 150 crates of beers of various brands worth RM25,500 that were stored in the house and a Toyota vehicle.
“A 30-year-old caretaker of the house was also arrested,” Mancha said in a statement.
He revealed that while officers were inspecting, a 67-year-old man arrived at the house and informed them that he was the owner of the goods.
“He then tried to bribe our leading officer by offering him RM10,000 despite being sternly warned,” he added.
The total value of the seizure items including tax is estimated to be RM456,988 while the vehicle is estimated to be worth RM60,000.
The caretaker and the seized items were handed over to Kuching District Police Headquarters while the owner was handed over to MACC for further action.
