Artist Scott Ahbeng dead at 80

KUCHING: Sarawak’s talented and well-established artist Raphael Scott Ahbeng whose many artworks have been successfully auctioned internationally, passed away at the age of 80 on Sunday.

Born in 1939 and dubbed as the master of Sarawak’s natural landscapes, Ahbeng who was of Bidayuh descent, died at his home in Tanjong Poting, Singai in Bau near here.

The late Ahbeng wore many hats. He was an advisor to the Sarawak Artist’s Society from 1999 to 2000, RTM broadcaster and newspapers’ columnist, to name a few.

He left behind wife Anastasia Mised, 78, four children, 11 grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

His body yesterday lay in state at the St Joseph Cathedral funeral parlour here.

His funeral service has been scheduled for 9.30am on Thursday at St Joseph Cathedral followed by cremation at the Treasure Hall of Nirvana Memorial Park, Jalan Kuching-Bau. His ashes will be placed at the Columbarium of St Peter’s Church, Padungan here.
