SIBU: Bukit Assek assemblyman Chieng Jin Ek commended the Sarawak men’s volleyball team for their straight-set victory against Pahang today (August 17).
Chieng who is also Sarawak’s assistant chef de mission for volleyball, emphasised that the state’s volleyball team needed to maintain their morale to achieve their goal of winning gold.
“There are still many days to go, so we need to keep this spirit up,” he stressed when speaking to reporters after the volleyball match between Sarawak and Pahang at the Rejang Park Volleyball Court.
He also said that the athletes’ spirits should be further boosted by the incentives announced by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg for Sarawak athletes who secure medals.
“It’s really encouraging for all the athletes. For gold, there will be a RM15,000 incentive, silver RM5,000 and bronze RM3,000.
“I believe this will motivate our athletes to perform well. Of course, Sarawak’s target is to become the overall champions… so far, so good,” he commented.
Chieng also expressed his gratitude to the spectators who came to support the Sarawak men’s volleyball team, enthusiastically cheering them on.
“This shows that people of different races are united in supporting Sarawak, which is the spirit of Sarawak,” he said.
Looking ahead, he hopes the Sarawak volleyball team will continue to work hard, stay focused and strive for good results in every match.
“As the host, we must ensure that all venues, hospitality and arrangements are well-prepared so that all teams from other states feel welcome. We must work together with a united heart to do our best,” he said.
