UNIMAS CHAIRMAN’S QUIT DECISION
KUCHING: Following the resignation of Tan Sri Dr Kamal Mat Salih as Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) chairman, “what is important now is discussion with the state government must be done before any new appointment,” said Tupong assemblyman Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman.
“There is nothing much to say about his resignation. It is said and done,” he said yesterday.
On Monday, Kamal quit amid criticism following his appointment to the post, replacing Tan Sri Sulong Matjeraie, whose term is due to end in April 2021.
The announcement of his resignation came days after the Sarawak government issued a statement that it was not consulted over the appointment nor notified officially of the appointment prior to the media announcement.
The statement also said the Unimas chairman had always been appointed after consultation with the state government.
Kamal, a prominent economist, had told online news portal FMT that he heard from certain quarters that the Sarawak government wanted a Sarawakian, and that they were unhappy they were not consulted on his appointment.
