KANOWIT: The Nanga Ngungun Resettlement Scheme, comprising 27 longhouses including Jagau, Tada, and Sekuau, stands as a testament to the government’s efforts in safeguarding the local population during the Emergency era of the 1970s, marking it as a symbol of independence.
The initiative not only aimed to organise the population but also to enhance the area’s development with safer roads, making social and economic activities easier for the community.
This was highlighted by Ngemah assemblyman Anyi Jana during the welcoming of the 2024 Kembara Merdeka Jalur Gemilang (KMJG) convoy at Rumah Taboh Rimau, part of the Nanga Ngungun Resettlement Scheme, yesterday (Sept 11).
“The enthusiasm of the people was clear as they awaited the convoy’s arrival, enlivening the route to the planned stop.
“For years, we had only seen this from a distance, and I hope that in the coming years, more flags will decorate the homes of Kanowit residents as a symbol of patriotism and love for our country.
“Today marks a historic moment for our longhouse, being chosen as a stop for KMJG 2024, which also involved students from Sekolah Kebangsaan Nanga Ngungun,” he said.
Chief assistant director of the Department of Information Malaysia (JAPEN) Sarawak Ajes Tuah explained that the KMJG’s goal is to foster patriotism and instil a sense of national pride among Malaysians of all races and religions.
He added that it also aims to restore public confidence in government programmes and policies, particularly within the context of Malaysia Madani.
Ajes also sees the KMJG as an opportunity to embody the spirit of the Rukun Negara, the pillar of unity and guiding principle for all Malaysians, encouraging participation in the Jalur Gemilang flag campaign in conjunction with National Month celebrations.
“I understand that the convoy in the Kanowit district involved around 15 vehicles from government departments and the local Komuniti Madani.
“I hope the community here will use this event as a platform to reflect on the true meaning of independence.
“While the KMJG convoy in Kanowit district was modest, it carries important and valuable messages for the local residents. The planned activities— via social media, mobile announcements, leaflet distribution, coffee shop discussions, briefings, and speeches — are expected to have a positive impact,” said Ajes.
The convoy began its journey in Sibu, passed through Pekan Song, visited Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan (C) Hin Hua in Song, made its way to Kanowit, and concluded in Sarikei, with plans to continue to Sarikei tomorrow.
