SIBU: Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng Jin Ek forked out RM22,000 from his Rural Transformation Project (RTP) allocation to carry out upgrading works at Lorong 5, Jalan Tong Sang here.

The upgrading of the drainage will include the widening of the narrow road by constructing a concrete retaining wall of about 15 metres.

“The road is getting narrower due to the collapse of the road verge. Accidents have been happening here. The project looks small but it is big to the community there as they have been waiting for it for years.

“The first phase of the project involves the widening of the road, piling, construction of its retaining wall and earth filing costing RM22,000.

“The rest of RM80,000 for phase 2 will be for the resurfacing of the road. The whole project will take three months to complete,” he said when met by reporters after the project handover ceremony to the contractor today.

Chieng also urged the residents of Bukit Assek constituency to help in supervising the RTP project.

“I want residents to be my supervisors as there are many RTP projects going on which I cannot always be on site,” he said.

Chieng said as a supervisor, residents will monitor the works to ensure that projects are carried out according to specifications.

Taking Lane 5, Jalan Tong Sang as an example, he said he had invited the residents from the seven houses concerned to know of the project content and participate by being a supervisor.
