BINTULU: There is a paramount need for the public to acquire knowledge and skills in this digital information era as technology has transformed today’s economic landscape.
Jepak assemblyman, Iskandar Turkee stressed that workers with skills and knowledge are highly valuable assets to any company or organization.
“In this digital information era, we need to have diverse knowledge and skills, as well as be responsive to the information we read, hear, and receive.
“The input that enters our minds, whether through reading or from digital media, will affect our intellect,” he said while speaking at the launch of the ’10-Minute Reading Together’ programme at the Bintulu Public Library here on Tuesday.
The programme themed ‘Reading Preserves Unity’ was organised by the Sarawak State Library Miri in collaboration with the Bintulu Development Authority (BDA) and the Bintulu District Education Office.
Iskandar also pointed out the importance of being cautious when accessing information on the internet.
“The information cannot be swallowed entirely, but must be filtered and evaluated,” he said, praising the organisers’ efforts in conducting literacy programmes for the community.
Through this program, Iskandar believed it would instill awareness among the public to obtain only accurate and authentic information, besides educating them to avoid the ‘viral culture’ of spreading false news on social media.
Miri Library regional manager, Razak Rambili said the program is an annual event held simultaneously nationwide in public places such as libraries, public parks, classrooms, or online.
He said its core objective is to promote a reading culture among the people.
Also present at the programme were BDA chief executive officer, Datuk Muhamad Yakup Kari, deputy officer (Learning Sector) of the Bintulu District education officer Nafisah Rosli, and community leader Penghulu Raini Piee.
