SIBU: Mental health has always been in the spotlight of every countries in the world as society grapple with life on a daily basis. It is the state of mental well- being that covers our emotional, psychological and social realms.
Government as a policymaker plays a crucial role in addressing the mental health crisis among our youth with comprehensive and targeted mental health interventions and policies.
Recognising the implications of mental health crisis, Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng Jin Ek, reckoned that government increase funding for mental health services and integrate mental health education into school curriculums.
He also recommended for a nationwide awareness campaigns to battle the mental health issue as it could reduce stigma and encourage early intervention.
“Collaboration with international organisations like UNICEF, as well as local stakeholders, can amplify our efforts.
“By working together, we can create a supportive environment that nurtures the mental well-being of our youth,” he said.
Chieng said this in his opening speech in conjunction with the Gawai celebration hosted by The Board of Visitors to the Sibu Hospital Psychiatric Ward here today (June 21).
He stressed that mental health of our youth is a reflection of our society’s overall well-being.
“It is our collective responsibility to ensure that the next generation grows up in an environment that supports their mental and emotional health.
“Let us take decisive action to improve the mental health landscape for Malaysian youth. Together, we can build a brighter, healthier future for our young people,” he added.
Also present were The Board of Visitors to the Sibu Hospital Psychiatric Ward chairman Kapitan Peter Lau Ik Yang and Sibu Hospital deputy director Dr Rachel Teng.
