KABONG: Local assemblyman Mohd Chee Kadri is planning on proposing that the Kabong International Kite Festival (KIKF) be included in the national tourism calendar.
He said the organisation of the festival had turned out to be successful in terms of attracting participation from foreign countries and at the same time had put Sarawak and Malaysia on the world map.
“For instance, the festival involves about 90 kites and sports kites enthusiasts from 36 countries this year.
“Therefore, I think it is appropriate the KIKF be included in the national tourism calendar,” he said, adding that he will meet the Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing on the matter.
Earlier, Mohd Chee attended the KIKF 2023 organising committee meeting here on Monday (Feb 6).
The KIKF, he said, which takes place early March, is expected to attract many visitors to stay at Tanjung Kembang Beach which is the main venue for the event.
“I feel that we, the community, as the host should show the best cultural values.
“When they (foreigners) return to their home country, they will remember the best treatment of Malaysians,” he said.
He added the festival is the best platform to promote the country’s uniqueness to the world.
As for traders, Mohd Chee said the festival would allow them to earn additional income.
The launch of KIKF 2023 is expected to be officiated by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg on March 2.
KIKF was introduced in 2018 with the participation of 10 countries. In 2019, it gathered participants from 30 countries.
However, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the festival was put on hold from 2020 until last year.
