THE late Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud’s legacy was honoured during a debate on a motion of appreciation for the former governor by state assemblymen in the third day of the DUN sitting today.

Engkilili assemblyman Johnical Rayong Ngipa affirmed that the rural development in Sarawak was pioneered by the late Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud.

He said Taib contributed not only in the context of political development, infrastructure and education, but also was responsible for Sarawak’s modernisation.

Johnical cited that during Taib’s tenure of 33 years as Sarawak’s Chief Minister and 10 years of being Sarawak’s Governor, his leadership changed the status of Sarawak.

“Sarawak changed from being a poor state to now a vibrant economy for all, especially people from rural areas.

“I still remember Taib’s policy was a policy of development. He brings development to the people of Sarawak especially in the rural area,” he said.

Johnical reminisced about winning the election in 2006 and how Taib regularly approached him, noting that Taib was a person that would never regard others based on their race and religion.

“The development of Sarawak today is the result of his contribution both directly and indirectly and now the development is being continued by our Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg,” Johnical said.
