KUCHING: George Young Si Ricord Junior, president of Persatuan Habitat Indigenous Daerah Untuk Pemulihan (HIDUP), has endorsed Supt (Rtd) Datuk Paul Kiong’s call for a full ceremonial funeral for the late Corporal Etim Jam.
In a statement today, he said such honour is a fitting tribute to Etim, who was Sarawak’s sole surviving recipient of the Darjah Kebesaran Seri Pahlawan Gagah Perkasa (SP), the nation’s highest federal award, and contributed significantly to both the country and Sarawak.
“As Sarawakians, we take immense pride in the bravery and sacrifices of our heroes. Etim’s dedication and courage are a testament to the strength and resilience of our people.
“His story, along with those of other Sarawakian heroes like Sgt (Rtd) Datuk Awang Raweng and Temengong Datuk Kanang Langkau, is a powerful reminder of our rich history and the pivotal role Sarawakians have played in the defense of our nation.
“As such, it is imperative that the federal and Sarawak governments recognise his invaluable contributions by providing him the honor and respect he so rightly deserves,” he said.
Furthermore, he stressed the need to address the welfare of veterans, particularly those who served during the nation’s formative and turbulent years.
“Their sacrifices should never be forgotten, and it is our duty to ensure that they receive the support and recognition they have earned.
“As we mourn the loss of a national and Sarawakian hero, let us also reflect on the enduring legacy of all our war heroes. Their stories of bravery and sacrifice are woven into the fabric of our national and state identity,” he added.
Etim’s courageous actions against communists terrorists during the ambush in Sibu in 1972, where he valiantly defended his convoy despite being wounded and outnumbered, demonstrate the spirit of heroism and selflessness that Sarawakians hold in the highest regard.
“His legacy of valor and patriotism will forever inspire future generations in Sarawak and beyond,” added George.
