BETONG: More than 1,000 guests attended a fund-raising dinner for the construction of a new building in conjunction with the 11th Anniversary of Che Zhong Khor Moral Uplifting Society, Betong held at Tan Sri Datuk Amar Stephen Kalong Ningkan’s Sports Hall here last Sunday.
Among the dinner guests were from Indonesia, China, Thailand and Australia.
Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah who was the guest of honour urged more investors to build hotels in the Betong Administration Centre to meet the demands for more lodging places so that more big events and activities can be held in the division.
“Betong has not enough hotels. Hence, we welcome it very much if there are investors interested in building hotels here. This is an opportunity to make money here,” he said.
Uggah who is also Member of Parliament for Betong added that Betong has various attractions both in terms of historical sites and popular local products.
He also lauded NGOs such as Che Zhong Khor Moral Uplifting Society Betong which has been instrumental in developing the society here, particularly involving welfare of the people irrespective of religion and race.
In support of the organisation’s desire to build a new building, Uggah and Layar Assemblyman, Gerald Rentap Jabu contributed RM100,000 to the building project.
He hoped the association would continue to play its roles and adopt the experiences of organisations from around the world.
Among those present were Layar Assemblyman, Gerald Rentap Jabu and his wife, Acting Resident of Betong, Friday Belik, Chairman of the United Moral Uplifting Society of Malaysia who is also president of Che Jin Khor Kedah, Datuk Li Ji We, Political Secretary to the Chief Minister, Dr Richard Rapu, chairman of Che Zhong Khor Moral Uplifting Society Betong, Yeo Teck Hing and Pemanca Kueh Tu Teck.
