SIBU: Organisers of blood donation campaigns are urged to hold at least five campaigns per year to ensure sufficient supply of blood at Sibu Hospital Blood Bank.
Sibu Hospital director Dr Ngian Hie Ung revealed that there are many of these organisers in town but most only hold two blood donation drives per year.
“We want them to organise five donation drives per year so that we can have regular donors and not have any problem with the blood supply,” she told a press conference yesterday to announce the forthcoming Malaysian Red Crescent Society 2019 National Blood Donation campaign.
Ngian also revealed that the blood bank would usually run out of supply during major festive seasons such as the Chinese New Year, Hari Raya and Gawai.
“We monitor our blood supply frequently to ensure that there is 100 pints at any one time. If we run out of it, the blood campaign organisers will be alerted,” she added.
On the national level blood donation campaign set to take place on Sept 28 at Tanahmas Hotel, Ngian said they wanted especially youths below 40 to join in the seminar entitled ‘Safe Blood For All’.
She explained that this was because they wanted more youths to be involved in the drive.
The event, which will also see a blood donation campaign from 9am to 11am, will be officiated at by MRCS national vice chairman Datuk Mohamad Rafiai Moktar.
Certificates of recognition will be presented to individual donors who donate more than 30 pints of blood while the winning team will receive the challenge trophy.
“Members of the public are urged to take part as our target is to collect 50 pints of blood,” said Ngian.
