LIMBANG: The state’s athletic community has been urged to strive for victory at this year’s Malaysia Games (SUKMA) and reclaim the overall champion title for Sarawak.
With the last triumph dating back 30 years ago to 1994, Karim asserted the significance of this year’s event as a chance to recreate history.
“Thirty years is a substantial period. It’s the span of a generation – long enough for children born then to have grown into adults now. That’s why SUKMA 2024 holds immense importance for our contingent. We cannot settle for anything less than the overall champion title. This is our opportunity to shine,” he said during the SUKMA Sarawak 2024 Baton Relay here today (Apr 27).
Abdul Karim pointed out the unique aspects of this year’s SUKMA, which boasts a diverse array of 37 sports events.
“This year’s SUKMA is special. With 37 sports events, including many fun-filled activities, it presents a unique opportunity for our athletes to showcase their talents and excel on a grand stage,” he added.
The scale of SUKMA 2024 is unprecedented, with a total of 484 sporting events, making it the 21st largest sports event ever held in Malaysia.
He said this extensive lineup provides ample opportunities for Sarawak’s athletes to demonstrate their prowess and contribute to the state’s quest for overall victory.
“With determination, dedication, and unity, I believe and hope Sarawakians are poised to make their mark and reignite the spirit of champions that has lain dormant for three decades,” he said.
