KUCHING: A local man who allegedly tried to give enforcement officers bribe amounting to RM18, 500 was ordered to be remanded for seven days.
The 26-year-old online gambling operator from Desa Wira, was suspected of trying to bribe the officers for the said amount so that no legal action would be taken against him.
Magistrate Zaiton Anuar ordered the suspect to be remanded from today until Oct 27 to assist in the investigation.
The online gambling operator was arrested after being warned several times not to give the bribe to law enforcement officers to refrain from taking action against him during a raid on his premises subsequent to receiving an alert about the illegal operation.
He would be investigated under the Common Gaming House Act 1953.
The Magistrate’s Court also ordered the investigating officer to take the suspect to a public hospital for treatment to injuries sustained during the arrest.
Meanwhile in a separate case, the Magistrate’s Court ordered a deputy general manager of a government agency to be released on a RM10,000 bail and ordered him to deposit RM5,000 in cash as surety after the end of the seven-day remand on suspicion of corruption.
Magistrate Zubaidah Sharkawi ordered the 57-year-old suspect to be released after he was detained by the Malaysia Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) on suspicion of receiving a bribe of more than RM36,000 from a contractor as an incentive to facilitate and expedite the payment of construction work claims that had been completed between 2015 and 2018.
