SIBU: Residents here leaving their houses empty during the holiday season have been advised to fill in the “Balik Kampung” information form provided at the nearest police station.

This will certainly help to avoid burglary cases, said Sibu deputy police chief Supt Collin Babat when contacted.

“This is to facilitate the police’s monitoring at their houses, especially in the urban area when city residents return to their hometowns during this festive season or yearend holidays.

“The purpose is to ensure the safety of the respective house as well as to prevent the occurrence of burglary when it is left vacant,” he said.

Collin added that the form could be obtained and filled in at any station near them.

Besides that, the public can also contact the police directly so that patrols can be done in their residential areas.

Those who want to return to their village this holiday are advised to be careful on the road and obey the traffic laws.

“I pray that the people of Sibu, who return to their hometowns, will always abide by the law and arrive safely at their respective destinations,” he said.

Collin noted that the public must also adhere to the standard operating procedures (SOPs) that have been set when celebrating the New Year.

Although the government allows the New Year celebrations to be held, the public are still needed to maintain physical distancing and avoid from coming into close contact including shaking hands.

“This is one of steps for us to curb the spread of the Covid-19 virus,” Collin added.
