SYDNEY: Dewan Negara President Senator Datuk Awang Bemee Awang Ali Basah attended the opening ceremony of the 67th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference here.

The ceremony was officiated by Her Excellency Margaret Beazley AC KC, the Governor of New South Wales, who also served as the Vice Patron of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA).

“The conference is an important platform for leaders and parliamentarians from Commonwealth member countries to share best practices and discuss common issues in an effort to strengthen the values and principles of the Commonwealth.

“At the conference, the Malaysian delegation attended several meetings, including those related to Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians (CWP), Commonwealth Parliamentarians with Disabilities (CPwD), involving members of parliament with disabilities, and the Society of Clerks at the Table (SoCATT), which involves parliamentary clerks,”  said a press release.

It added that the delegates also participated in workshops on current issues, including women’s involvement in politics, artificial intelligence and best practices in strengthening parliamentary institutions.

Yesterday (Nov 7), the delegation attended the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association General Assembly, where representatives discussed matters related to governance, constitutional amendments, association membership, and financial statements of the association.

A debate session was held on the theme “Votes vs Likes – The Role of Parliament in Strengthening Democratic Resilience in an Age of Fake News and Synthetic Media.”

The Malaysian delegation is led by Awang Bemee along with State Legislative Assembly Speakers, the Secretary of the Senate, and Secretaries of the State Legislative Assemblies.

The participation of the Malaysian delegation in this prestigious conference reflects the country’s commitment to continue strengthening diplomatic relations and supporting Commonwealth values such as democracy, human rights, and good governance.
