KUCHING: Awang Putrayusrie Awang Redzuan fulfilled his promise by diving into the pool at the Pandelela Rinong Aquatic Centre in Petra Jaya after Sarawak emerged overall champions at the Malaysia Games (SUKMA) 2024.

The chief executive officer (CEO) of the Sarawak Sports Corporation (SSC) fulfilled his vow along with other officials who jumped into the pool at 11.30 pm the night the result was announced.

“Thank God, finally the Sarawak contingent has emerged as the overall champion at the 21st SUKMA 2024.

“I have fulfilled my vow to dive into the pool at the Pandelela Rinong Aquatic Centre last night,” said Awang Putrayusrie to Sarawak Tribune when contacted on Sunday.

The director of the Sarawak State Sports Council also expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development under the leadership of Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah for its support.

“We would like to extend our congratulations to Datuk Gerald Rentap Jabu (Chef de mission for the Sarawak SUKMA contingent) and Morshidi Fredrick (permanent secretary of the Ministry of Youth, Sports, and Entrepreneur Development Sarawak),” he added.

The 21st SUKMA 2024 concluded last Saturday, with Sarawak being crowned the overall champion.

Sarawak achieved a total of 199 medals, including 76 gold, 54 silver, and 69 bronze, ending a 30-year wait.

For the record, Sarawak had previously won the SUKMA championship three times consecutively in 1990, 1992, and 1994.
