BY MICHAEL SERING KUCHING: The Ministry of Industrial and Entrepreneur Development has urged all Small and Medium Entreprise (SME) in the State to be involved in digital economy as advised by Chief Minister, Datuk Patinggi (Dr) Abang Johari Tun Openg. Its minister, Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan said that it was to ensure that 98 per cent of the entire business established in the state became the backbone of the state economy. “Digital economy has become the focus of our chief minister and you (State SMEs) must put some effort to be involved with digital economy, if not, we will be left behind,” he said while officiating the Seminar on Malaysia Productivity Blueprint For Manufacturing Nexus: Driving Productivity of the Nation at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) on Tuesday. He added that the involvement of SME in digital economy was no longer an option as they need to be innovative and creative, using new technology to remain competitive within the challenging global stage. “The government only can assist the private sector especially SMEs as state-derived economy, but they must take the opportunity provided through Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE), Social Economy and Rural Transformation, and digital economy,” he said. Awang Tengah stressed that the state could not depend on low cost strategy, low technology and the use of large workforce for economic development which meant that the right track for the state would be through industries and utilisation of digital economy. Also present were Assistant Minister for Entrepreneur and SME Development, Datuk Mohd Naroden Majais, President of the Sarawak Business Federation, Datuk Abang Abdul Karim Tun Openg, State Malaysian Productivity Corporation (MPC) director, Tengku Azmi Tengku Majid.
