Azam members on 4-day familiarisation visit to Lawas

KUCHING: Angkatan Zaman Mansang Sarawak (Azam Sarawak) sees big potential in Lawas’s tourism and agro-based products.

The district, which is located in between the Temburong district of Brunei and Sedumin of Sabah, has many traditional and attractive emerging products.

Azam Sarawak is keen to assist in promoting the tourism potential of the area and is organising a study visit and rural community outreach programme there.

The visit, which is part of its efforts to familiarise Azam members with Lawas’ socio economic development starts today (July 11) until July 14.

The trip is organised in collaboration with Lawas District Office.

Among the places that the Azam members would be visiting are Kampung Awat-Awat, the tahai cottage industry and long jetty in Kampung Punang, Meragang Buffalo Station and the Ceramic Beads Handicraft Centre at Kampung Long Tuma.

The programme’s main objectives are to provide its members with an opportunity to reach out to and contribute to rural community development.

To achieve this objective, a knowledge sharing session and networking lunch will be held during the study visit to Kampung Awat-Awat.

The knowledge sharing session will be conducted by Azam member Datuk Dr Munirah Mohd Hassan.

Some 50 participants comprising selected JKKK members, villagers of Kampung Awat-Awat and villagers from Sundar area are expected to attend the session.

To familiarise the Azam delegation with Lawas’ socio-economic development, Lawas District Office will be giving an overview of the development in Lawas.

Other programme highlights are knowledge sharing session from a local tourism operator and entrepreneur Joseph Yusuf Tai, on the update of e-tourism projects in Lawas, Azam members Associate Professor Dr Margaret Chan Kit Yok on using e-books for tourism and Edward Minggat Gena, on engaging the rural community in tourism. The participants comprising relevant business communities in Lawas are expected to attend these sessions.

The Azam delegation will also hold social gatherings in Lawas town and Kampung Punang to enhance rapport and networking with its local partners.

Azam members comprise, among others, government officers, media practitioners, academicians and professionals from various fields.
