SIBU: The newly elected Jepak assemblyman Iskandar Turkee, is capable of shouldering the responsibility of continuing the development agenda effectively in his constituency.

Tanjong Datu assemblyman Azizul Annuar Adenan, who stated this, added, “I believe the residents will not regret voting for their new elected representative in the Jepak by-election.

“I would also like to congratulate Iskandar for winning by a significant majority of 8,784 votes.

“This clearly indicates the strong support for the Gabungan Pari Sarawak (GPS) under the leadership of Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.”

Azizul said this when met by New Sarawak Tribune at the PBB Special Convention 2023 for Sibu Zone at the Kingwood Hotel here on Sunday.

On the low voter turnout, he said it could have been due to various factors.

“One of them could be that some Jepak voters work outside the area, and the short notice made it difficult for them to return to cast their votes,” he said.

Meanwhile, Lingga assemblywoman Dayang Noorazah Awang Sohor said that GPS had worked hard to ensure a victory.

“We know that during by-elections, many voters may choose not to participate, or some of them may assume that GPS will definitely win.

“What we observed was that the voter turnout among the younger generation was also very low, so this experience served as a lesson for all of us,” she said.

Noorazah emphasised the need to educate the youth about the importance of voting to encourage their participation in future elections.

For the record, the voter turnout for the Jepak by-election was relatively low at 48.57 per cent.
