SIBU: Sarawak made a promising start on the court today, with its women’s singles player, Wong Ling Ching, following the lead set by Sarawak’s men’s singles team by progressing to the quarterfinals on August 21.

Wong, the second-ranked women’s singles player in SUKMA XXI, easily defeated Federal Territories’ Alysha Jeffery in straight sets, winning 2-0.

In the first set, Wong comfortably took an 11-5 lead into the interval before closing the set at 21-14.

In the second set, Wong effortlessly thwarted Alysha’s attempts to force a decider, leading 11-4 at the interval and finishing the match strongly at 21-9.

Tomorrow morning (August 23), Wong will face off against Negeri Sembilan’s Ung Xi Xing for a chance to advance to the semifinals in the afternoon.

Wong stands as the sole hope for the Sarawak Badminton contingent in SUKMA XXI’s women’s singles category after another Sarawak player, Megan Tan, was defeated in the Round of 32 on August 21.
